Expectations that the appointment of Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila as chief of staff to the president will bring an end to the fight with his deputy, Idris Wase have been dashed as the speaker is to serve out his term as speaker and by that deny Wase the temporary joy of being speaker.

GWG.ng reports that Speaker Gbajabiamila and his deputy have been at war over the backing the senior presiding officer of the House has given to Tajudeen Abbas as his successor.

Wase who claimed to have sought support from Gbajabiamila to no avail has since their quarrels became open refused to join the speakerā€™s procession into the House and has openly confronted him during at least one parliamentary session.

There were expectations that Gbajabiamila could upon his appointment resume immediately in the Presidential Villa and as such give his deputy the brief opportunity of being speaker in the same way Speaker Aminu Tambuwal gave to Emeka Ihedioha at the end of their tenure in 2015.

However, expectations of that have been dashed as Gbajabiamila in a message of appreciation to the president noted that he would be resuming in the villa at the end of his stewardship as speaker on June 14, 2023.

He said:

Thank you Mr. President @officialABAT for finding me worthy of being your Chief of Staff.

Having spent the last 20 years in the Nigerian Parliament, and after winning my 6th term election into the National Assembly, I shall work with Mr President in discharging the enormous task ahead of him for the peace and progress of the federal republic of Nigeria.

I shall give my best when I take office on June 14 2023 as reflected in Mr. President’s official letter.

GWG.ng reports that the resumption of the speaker in the villa on June 14 after the House leadership election is indicative of the fact that the Gbajabiamila and Wase fight will drag to the end of the legislative session.
