Emefiele trial

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed an immediate investigation into the affairs of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN and in that direction ordered the immediate suspension of Mr Godwin Emefiele as governor of the apex bank, a government statement disclosed late on Friday night.

The suspension was conveyed by Willie Bassey, a Director in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, in a statement on Friday night.

“This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.”

“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.”

GWG.ng reports that the move against Mr Emefiele has long been expected and there were reports of the Central Bank governor angling to go on leave ahead of the inauguration of the Tinubu administration.

The suspension of Mr Emefiele is also expected to be viewed with political perspectives given the insinuations in the days leading to the All Progressives Congress, APC national convention when he became an issue among the political class over moves to draft him into the primary election process.
