President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday for the first time opened up on the reason he suspended Mr Godwin Emefiele as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and put him in detention.

According to President Tinubu Nigeria’s financial system under the leadership of Governor Emefiele was rotten with many Nigerians outside the country in difficult straits remitting funds through the banking sector.

Tinubu spoke during a town hall meeting with Nigerians in Paris, France organized on the sidelines of his visit to Paris, France for the New Global Financing Pact Summit.

Recall that Tinubu suspended the CBN governor and ordered a probe of his office. Emefiele was subsequently arrested and ferried from Lagos to Abuja where he has remained incommunicado in the custody of the Department of State Services.

According to Tinubu many Nigerians abroad were unable to send money to their relatives because of the multiple exchange rates, saying all that have become a thing of the past.

“Then the financial system was rotten. Few people making bags of our money and then you yourself, you stopped sending money home to our poor parents. Several windows… but that is gone now, is gone.

“The man is in the hands of authorities, something is being done about that, they will sort themselves out.”

GWG.ng reports that besides the stated reasons by President Tinubu that some have also inputted political motif for the continuing detention of Emefiele following the speculations that he was the candidate of a section of the Muhammadu Buhari cabal for succession.
