Nigeria went on top of the Group B of the ongoing Women’s World Cup after the Super Falcons came from behind to snatch a 3-2 victory against co-host, Australia at Melbourne.

GWG.ng reports that Australia which is ranked 10 in women’s football well ahead of 39 ranked Nigeria came into the game with much higher expectation to win and took the lead in the first minute of the extra time in the first half through Emily van Egmond.

However, Nigeria brought the game to level four minutes later at the dot of end of the extra time of the first half at 46 minutes.

Australia appeared to assert dominance in the midfield but the compact defence of the Nigerian team was their greatest challenge.

The entry of Nigeria playmaker, Assisat Oshaola in the early minutes of the second half appeared to bolster the confidence of the Nigerian women and that confidence soon paid off in the 65th minute when Osinachi Ohale put in the ball from a play in following a build up by the Nigerian ladies. It was, however, a costly goal for the Nigerians as it sent her off for some minutes and required medical assistance to get off the field.

Oshaola put in the third goal for the Nigerian ladies in the 72nd minute stunning the much more reckoned Aussies who had the full complement of the home crowd behind them.

A consolation goal for the Aussies came in the last minute of the 10 minute added time in the second half but it was to no avail.

The result puts Group B in a spin with the prospects for any of the three teams Nigeria, Canada and Australia qualifying for the next round of the Women’s World Cup. However, Nigeria is at the top and face the worst-performing team in the group, Ireland on July 31.
