HAPPENING NOW: ECOWAS Leaders Meet In Abuja Over Rising Tension In Niger

An Extraordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is currently taking place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Chairman of the Authority, President Bola Tinubu, is presiding over the session summoned to deliberate on the developments in Niger Republic where the military recently seized power from a constitutional administration.

The Commander of the countryā€™s Presidential Guards, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, on Friday, declared himself the Head of a Transitional Government while soldiers are still holding President Mohamed Bazoum in the presidential palace.

Among leaders attending the meeting are President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau, Alassane Ouattara of Cote D’Ivoire and Faure Gnassingbe of Togo.

Others are President Macky Sall of Senegal, President Patrice Talon of Benin, and President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana.

The Transitional President of Chad, Mahamat Deby, showed up and departed before the opening of the meeting.

Cape Verde and Liberia are being represented by their Foreign Affairs Ministers.
