FG Reiterates Stance On Tuition Fees In Federal Universities

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its stance that federal universities within the country are prohibited from imposing tuition fees on their students.

The announcement was made by Mr. David Adejo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, during a public hearing held by the House of Representatives ad hoc committee on students’ loans in Abuja.

Adejo clarified that the charges levied by federal universities are intended to cover expenses related to accommodation, ICT services, power, and other essentials. He emphasized that the authority to approve such charges lies with the respective Governing Councils of the universities. The only exception to this policy was the University of Lagos, which sought to raise fees following the dissolution of its Governing Council. However, the move was halted by a resolution from the House and a subsequent directive from the President.

Adejo debunked the notion that the increase in university charges was linked to the students’ loan act. He explained that the collected charges primarily go towards covering operational costs, including electricity bills. Despite these charges, many universities have struggled to meet their financial requirements.

Regarding the students’ loans scheme, Adejo shared that preparations are underway for its launch during the 2023/2024 academic calendar. He revealed that President Bola Tinubu has instructed that all necessary preparations be concluded by September.

The committee’s chairman, Rep. Teseer Ugbor, stressed that the students’ loan initiative is part of the federal government’s effort to alleviate the financial burdens faced by Nigerian students and ensure broader access to higher education. Ugbor expressed concerns related to the disbursement process, fund recovery from beneficiaries, and the potential accessibility issues for some students. He advocated for open dialogue during the process of amending the law to ensure that all interested Nigerian students can benefit from the loan.
