How Gov Umo Eno Is Demystifying Governance
By Emmanuel Aziken
Days after he shocked protocol officials and the citizenry when he held an umbrella at the flag-off of the construction of a new Primary Health Care Centre in Ikot Nkwo community, Governor Umo Eno has continued to demystify the art of governance in a way that could only have been inspired by spiritual mentorship.
GWG.ng reports that Governor Eno had identified with the citizenry at Ikot Nkwo community with the pledge to reconstruct the PHC facility. Remarkably, the heavens blessed the venture with rains of blessings. Normally protocol officials would hold the umbrella for officers of state to protect them from the heavens. But on that day, Pastor Eno shied away from such as he followed the practice of other world leaders as in Britain and US who hold their umbrellas themselves.
That effort of demystifying governance again came to the fore days later as Pastor Eno while embarking on a trip to Abuja decided to use the state-owned airline, Ibom Air, a legacy from the immediate past administration of Deacon Udom Emmanuel.
Airline and airport officials were again shocked as the governor subjected himself to every protocol as expected of every passenger boarding the airliner.
He was frisked by airline staff and made to pass through security checks every other passenger was subjected to.
Indeed, the act of using the state owned commercial airline despite the availability of the official private jet was also another lesson in business management that the governor has brought to bear in governance.
According to him, his position as Governor of the State, has made him the chief marketing officer of the airline and as such using the airline was to check on the sustenance of the airline’s standard in service delivery.
Returning from his trip at the weekend, he hailed the services on the flight as spectacular and world- class thereby justifying the reason the airline is the most preferred by air travelers in the nation.
He used the opportunity to debunk the speculations that he traveled in the public transport because the immediate past governor was in custody of his official jet, describing the speculation as unfounded and baseless.
Governor Eno wondered what the people would say when he would travel in the soon-to be launched palliative buses that would be introduced to cushion the harsh effects of fuel subsidy removal and asked if the people will turn around to insinuate that the immediate past governor has taken over his official vehicles?
The State Chief Executive maintained that his style of administration is to demystify governance so as to enable him connect easily with the ordinary people.
“We are promoting Akwa Ibom Brand and the state owns hundred percent shares in this airline and by virtue of my office, i am the chief marketing officer of the airline if you may ask. My job is to promote our brand.
“We are planning to bring buses as part of the palliative. We are in talks with some companies. When the buses finally come and I board one of those buses, would people now say the immediate past Governor has taken over my official vehicles ?
“There is no truth whatsoever that the immediate past Governor is with our aircraft. This is not just the kind of things we should be talking or arguing about. Akwa Ibom should move beyond this sort of cheap talk.
“Again, I want to put it very clear that everyone has his style of leadership. My own style is to demystify governance. I like to get in contact with people, and I like to be myself. This Government thing will come and go. So what is the big deal? “
