Son Storms Out As Oshiomhole Hugs Obaseki

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Monday hugged his successor as governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki at a ceremony marking the referendum that gave birth to the defunct Midwest Region just as the deputy governor, Philip Shaibu who has become estranged to both men stormed out of the event.

Shaibu blamed his decision to walk out on the restriction placed by the governor on his media crew and other aides from entering the venue of the celebration in Benin.

However, the picture of Obaseki and Oshiomhole embracing one another and Shaibu walking out is bound to echo in many hearts on the fluidity of the political game. Many in Edo will remember the significant role Oshiomhole played in the political trajectory of Shaibu from his days as a student union activist through his emergence as majority leader of the Edo State House of Assembly and subsequently as Deputy Governor.

Oshiomhole and Shaibu according to many sources have come a long way. Oshiomhole was allegedly adopted by Shaibu’s father as his son when the former governor arrived Kaduna in the mid seventies as a young man just out of secondary school.

Oshiomhole on his part played a fatherly role over Shaibu, nurturing him to the level he is now. That was until Obaseki came between them before the 2020 governorship election when Oshiomhole decided to stop his successor’s second term bid.

Shaibu turned against his adopted father in support of his boss, Obaseki. All sorts of names and qualifications were made by Shaibu against Oshiomhole including rigging and such.

While the love lasted between Obaseki and Shiabu and the mutual hatred by both men against Oshiomhole lasted, it seemed as if they would all go to the grave in the positions they adopted. Shaibu regularly referred to Obaseki as his senior brother and vowed never to abandon him.

That was until Tuesday when he walked out on his senior brother after his media handlers and other aides were stopped from entering the event to mark the 60th anniversary of the Midwest Referendum.

Meanwhile, Oshiomhole who was invited like other former governors chose to attend making an exception for the belligerence that has existed between him and the government in Benin.

In the end he gave a big hug to his successor, Obaseki while his former son, Shaibu was at that time venting over the turn of events with the governor that made him to walk out. It is another demonstration of the fickleness of the political class.

In August 2020 a month before the Edo governorship election, Shaibu had while talking to journalists acknowledged, Oshiomhole as his father: thus:

“Remember Oshiomhole is my father and before now I was living in his house each time I visited the village.I have informants in his house who give me updates on a daily basis about happenings in his house.”
