A strange event occured as a newborn baby boy has been rescued alive from a pit toilet in Otuocha, Anambra State, three days after being abandoned there by his mother.

The Anambra Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Affairs disclosed that the mother, identified as 20-year-old Nwaedoka Chidimma from Izzi, Ebonyi state, gave birth to the baby on Sunday, August 27, 2023, and left him in the toilet.

The rescue unfolded after Esther Omesi, a farmer and a friend of Chidimma, noticed suspicious behavior from the latter. Chidimma, who was staying with Omesi due to a farming job, complained of stomach upset and went to the pit toilet.

Concerned, Omesi called a nurse after Chidimma emerged from the toilet, covered in blood. The nurse’s examination revealed the baby was missing. Believing that Chidimma had a stillbirth, Omesi encouraged her to inform her parents and return home.

However, on Tuesday morning, August 29, the situation took a surprising turn when cries of a baby were heard. Omesi and others quickly rescued the newborn using a ladder and immediately notified the authorities. Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Hon Ify Obinabo, stepped in, arranging for the baby’s treatment at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Amaku Awka. The mother was subsequently arrested.

Meanwhile, the Ebonyi lady is yet to reveal why she abandoned the newborn in the toilet in Otuocha, Anambra State.
