Why I Didn’t Drag Tinubu To Tribunal – Sowore

Sowore next president of Nigeria

Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 elections, has provided reasons for not contesting President Bola Tinubu’s victory at the Presidential Elections Tribunal, unlike his counterparts.

Sowore expressed doubt that justice would be served because he lacked confidence in the tribunal, citing its historical performance in election-related cases.

During an interview on Arise News, Sowore noted that Nigerian courts had never annulled an election, making him skeptical about the chances of the flag bearers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, achieving different results. His comments came after the presidential election petition tribunal upheld President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 polls.

Sowore stated, “What we’ve been saying about the Labour Party and the PDP is that they are essentially the same. We are not part of that coalition or alliance. Regarding the court, when someone steals from you, and you seek to retrieve it, but they insist you go to court, you have to await the court’s decision.”

“But a court that granted a governorship to the fourth-place candidate in Imo State is unlikely to be the court I would turn to when I’ve been cheated on this scale. The court has not provided justice for people like me throughout my life in this country. Therefore, it’s not a court where I have implicit or explicit confidence.”

Sowore emphasized that opposition parties are frequently encouraged to pursue legal action as a means to pacify Nigerians. “The courts in Nigeria have never nullified a presidential election. Even in 2007, when an election was conducted without serial numbers on the ballot papers, the court ruled that serial numbers were unnecessary, and the candidate for whom the election was rigged, Yar’Adua, emerged and acknowledged the problematic election but still accepted the outcome.”

“So, I don’t believe we will go to a court that may not be capable of or hasn’t provided justice in similar cases for us. I believe they direct these individuals to the courtroom to pacify the Nigerian people, ensuring they accept this unacceptable situation. They made certain there were no street uprisings to reclaim the stolen mandate from whatever fraudulent election they conducted.”

“That’s why they guide you to the courtroom because they already know the expected outcome. We are also aware of how these courts are influenced by political parties in power. We cannot deceive ourselves,” Sowore concluded in explaining why he didn’t take Tinubu to the tribunal.
