Delta Central rerun PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Delta State has been wedged between the devil and the deep blue sea on how to go about a possible rerun in the Delta Central Senatorial District following the large political imprint of former Governor James Ibori on the party’s candidate, Senator Ighoyota Amori.

GWG.ng reports that Senator Ede Dafinone who was returned in the February 25 election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC had the result upturned after the National Assembly Election Tribunal ordered a re-run in 48 units across four out of eight local government areas in the district.

The prospect of a rerun has given another opportunity for the former occupant of the Delta Central Senatoiral seat, Senator Amori of the PDP to try to retrieve the seat.

Amori is a very close confidant of the erstwhile governor of the state, Chief James Ibori, who is also the patron of the Delta United Group, DUG a group of dissidents in the PDP who worked against the election of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. GWG.ng reports that following the loss of the PDP governorship ticket to Oborevwori by David Edevbie and the failure of the group to upturn the primary result in court that the group subsequently pitched tent with Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the All Progressives Congress, APC governorship candidate.

However, despite the overt support of the Ibori group for Omo-Agege, Oborevwori rolled to a landslide victory, a development that is believed to have punctured the myth behind Ibori in Delta State.

However, with the court order for a rerun of the Delta Central election in selected polling centres, GWG.ng reports that opinion is divided in Delta Central PDP with some stakeholders saying that they will not support an Ibori man to emerge after the former governor inspired the DUG to stop the election of Oborevwori.

“There is not much enthusiasm for Amori because of Ibori and I will not be surprised if Dafinone easily wins the rerun,” a PDP chieftain told GWG.ng late on Wednesday.

It is also viewed that a victory for Amori according to some will give further political capital to Ibori.

The immediate past governor of the state, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa had led the mainstream of the party to neutralize the Ibori mystique when he threw support behind Oborevwori against Edevbie who was backed by Ibori.
