Controversy As BBNaija’s Venita Claims Tiv Men ‘Donate Wives’

Hon Dickson Tarkighir, the representative for Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency in Benue State’s House of Representatives, has issued a stern warning of a potential N10 billion lawsuit against Venita Akpofure and the organizers of the reality show for supposedly defaming the Tiv nation.

The controversy stems from comments made by Venita on the reality show, where she asserted that “Tiv men give their wives to visitors for entertainment purposes.” These remarks ignited a firestorm of outrage among the Tiv community in Nigeria’s North Central region, prompting calls for legal action against her.

In response, Hon. Tarkighir has proposed legal action against both Venita and the Big Brother Naija brand, alleging that they provided her with a “mega platform” to defame an entire tribe and are consequently accountable for not disassociating from her.

Taking to his Facebook page, he expressed his stance with this statement: “#Venita Akpofure – We intend to file a 10 billion Naira defamation lawsuit against her, the Big Brother brand, and its promoters, as they offered her a significant platform to defame an entire tribe, and they share responsibility for not disavowing her.”

The claim from Venita about Tiv men donating their wives to visitors is an example of the dissonance that may arise when cultural perspective are not properly understood.
