Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi has directed the Ministry to review the road works of CGC Construction Company and revert to his office within seven days, adding that every road being constructed must have a consultant because majority of the jobs done have all failed because they were not built with concrete.

He also said that contractors handling the failed portion of the Abuja-Lokoja Highway 1 and 2 must reconsider use of dust base for the roads.

He directed the RCC contractors to provide him with a list of failed roads before they return to work on them so he could ascertain the value for money component of all contracts for road construction under his watch.

He said such reconsideration must be done to ensure value for money in the future road construction that would deliver quality roads to Nigerians for longer use.

Umahi said the stone base must be used for further road construction to avert the avalanche of failures experienced on the already constructed roads.

He insisted that the rate of road failures after expenditure of public funds on them must stop and said it was incumbent on the government to procure the services of reputable consultants who are interested in defending their integrity to oversee roads and give Nigerians the desired value for money.

Umahi in a statement signed by Director Information, Relations Unit, Blessing Lere-Adams said: “We have so many failed portions of the road, they have to go round and give me the list of failed portions of the road before returning to work to reconstruct them.

He said, “Stone base must be used, not dust base”.

“We must get a reputable consultant to supervise the road construction so that when the road fails, we can hold them accountable, something must be done to change the present situation of how we construct our roads, our roads should be constructed on concrete, he made this remark while inspecting Phase II of Lokoja –Okene road in Kogi,” he added.

During his inspection of Gada- Biyu Bridge bound 1 & 2 on the Lokoja – Abuja road the minister directed RCC Contractor in charge of the construction work to reconstruct the failed section of the road that was earlier constructed by the company.

He told some of the road contractors whom he inspected that no one would increase contract price under him and a single lane must be followed to the end where the job is less than 50% on any ongoing dual carriageway under construction by the same company.
