Prominent Afrobeat artiste, Seun Kuti has come to the defense of the late Nigerian musician Mohbad’s father, who faced criticism for the quick burial of his son.

Mohbad, who passed away under controversial circumstances on September 12, was laid to rest the following day, September 13, 2023.

Many fans of the musician took to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the singer’s father, accusing him of hastily burying his son without proper preparations or investigations.

In an interview on media personality Nedu’s podcast, Thehonestbunch, Seun Kuti addressed the criticism surrounding Mohbad’s funeral as arranged by his father. He argued that the deceased’s father was only being criticized because of his poverty.

Kuti stated, “Poverty is playing a significant role in this whole Mohbad issue. People are saying Mohbad’s father killed him because he buried him early. Who would want to keep looking at his son’s lifeless body for two to three days?”

In Pidgin, Kuti posed the question, “If it were Otedola’s child who died and was buried overnight, what would anyone say here? Wouldn’t people be visiting to offer condolences at his home?”

Rather than offering condolences and support to the grieving father of Mohbad, Seun Kuti emphasized that the public had unfairly cast him as an evil figure capable of harming his own son. He pointed out that the late artiste had faced bullying and criticism during his lifetime, yet little had been said about it.
