Ex-Senator Athan Achonu Wins Labour Party Governorship Ticket In Imo

Imo gubernatorial candidate on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), Athan Achonu, has said that he is on a mission of the Imo people to remove the incumbent governor of the state, Hope Uzodinma.

Achonu said the verdict of the Supreme Court which has dismissed the deceitful legal campaign by the two aspirants who were defeated by him during the April 15, 2023 primaries has put to rest all such attempted distractions.

He said he did not lose sleep over the legal campaign mounted by Maduka Basil and Joseph Ukaegbu, which the Supreme Court unraveled and dismissed.

According to Senator Athan Achonu, “I have refused to join issues with Ukaegbu and his Cohorts because I think it was not necessary.

“In the first place, I was not sued and secondly I won a free and fair election and thirdly INEC published my name.

“It is when they say I am no more the candidate, that is when I will be bothered. I have been concentrating on my campaigns because the Imolites are bent on removing the present APC government in Imo State because of all the atrocities being committed.

“I want to make it clear now to imo people because it was a psychological warfare.

“The whole idea was to make Imolites think that there could be a problem with my candidacy, so they will be confused and think, if I vote for Senator Achonu it will be a wasted effort,

“That was just the psychological warfare that they were waging against Imolites but thank God the Supreme Court has laid that to rest today.

“So I am calling on all Imolites to come out in their numbers to campaign and champion the course of taking back Imo for themselves because what is happening there is Sacrilegious.

“I decided to speak about the social media that has been agog with fake news but I am blaming the press. This is a simple matter of you guys picking up the phone to call INEC, and enquire who is the Labour Party candidate for Umo and then you lay this to rest but no, even the judgement itself was clear, the High Court declined jurisdiction and dismissed the matter.

“The Appeal Court also dismissed the matter. The same thing has happened today at the Supreme Court.”

Earlier, the party had in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Pastor Obiora Ifoh said it was the end of the road for the Apapa group as supreme court affirms Achonu’s candidacy and consequently legitimised the National Chairman status of Barr. Julius Abure in the Labour Party.

The statement reads in part: “A panel of five justices led by Iyang Okoro also cautioned the Appellant for abusing court process and wasting the time of the courts all through from the lower courts.

“Two other respondents in the matter were Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and the Lamidi Apapa-led candidate, Joseph Ukaegbu, alias Ikenga, whose request to seek a consequential order was also rejected by the Supreme Court.

“With this judgement by the highest court in Nigeria, the Lamidi Apapa’s plot to hijack the affairs of the Labour Party including the powers to nominate candidates has finally come to an end.”

The statement by the party said the legal counsel to the Labour Party, Barrister Okwudili Anozie, said, “Today at the Supreme Court, the antics of  Basil Maduka and his accomplice Joseph Ukaegbu, alias Ikenga, was put to an end as they met their Waterloo at the Apex Court.

“Today was a culmination of their deceit and lies to Imolites spanning from their misrepresentation of the true position of the judgments of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.

“Upon the exposure and collapse of their lies before the Supreme Court today, Basil’s Counsel, with tails in between his legs, immediately withdrew his subterfuge appeal that was aimed at giving credence to Ukaegbu’s sham, non-existent primaries.

“The Supreme Court didn’t entertain Ukaegbu’s counsel’s ignorant attempt to seek a consequential order, which even a first-year student of law knows cannot be sought by a Respondent, especially in this case where the appeal was dismissed.

“Indeed, today has been a day of reckoning for evil-doers whose sole plan was to stop the aspiration of Imolites in their determination to Take Imo Back through Senator Athan Nneji Achonu.”
