Nigeria Organise labour strike

Leaders of Nigeria’s organised Labour have arrived the presidential Villa in a last ditch meeting summoned by the presidency towards averting the national strike by labour to protest the sufferings in the land occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidies.

GWG.ng reports that organized labour through the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC have separately initiated moves for a national strike to commence from Tuesday.

The government had initiated moves to abort the strike through first raising the banner of the exparte injunction against the national strike obtained few months ago. Labour dismissed that saying that it was not bound by an exparte injunction that had limits of time.

The government subsequently invited the organized Labour last Friday for meetings but the two labour centres ignored the meetings with the excuse that the invitations came late.

GWG.ng reports that the latest invitation came after several affiliate unions to the NLC and the TUC including health, education, electricity among others gave instructions to their members to heed the strike notice.

Today’s meeting was scheduled to commence at 2.00 pm in the Presidential Villa and several ministers have been waiting since then but the leaders of Nigeria’s organised labour arrived just about 3.15 p.m. for the make or mar meeting aimed to break the strike.

GWG.ng reports that present the TUC delegation is led by the General Secretary, Nuhu Toro while the NLC delegation is led by the president, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

The ministers present include the minister of labour Simon Lalong, the minister of state, Nikuru , Minister of National Planning, Minister of finance and minister of humanitarian affairs. The government delegation is led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
