Six Reasons Why Someone Can Faint
Fainting or syncope occurs when a person has a brief, sudden loss of consciousness as happened on Wednesday during the ministerial screening of Balarabe Lawal in the Nigerian Senate and there are many reasons for this besides the exhaustion that the minister-designate cited after his revival.
Indeed, fainting can be triggered by the decrease in blood to the brain, which is also triggered by illnesses, deficiencies and traumas.
Illnesses
There are certain illnesses that can cause someone to collapse or faint. Such could be traced to heart problems like arrhythmia. In addition, seizure hypoglycemia and poor regulation of blood pressure can also lead to fainting. Experts also linked fainting to peripheral autonomic neuropathy and Parkinson’s disease.
Medication
Meds that cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, dehydration, or low blood sugar can trigger dizziness, which can also increase your risk of falling, collapse and hurting yourself. Studies demonstrate that the more medications you take, the more likely you are to fall and that’s especially true in older adults.
Migraine
Transient loss of consciousness is usually seen in migraine with brainstem aura (basilar type migraine). In this type of migraine, fainting develops as a result of the onset of migraine in the brainstem.
Dehydration (Exhaustion)
Vomiting and diarrhea can also lead to rapid fluid loss. If you don’t replace the water you lose, you can become dehydrated.
Dehydration leads to fainting spells by reducing your circulating blood volume, making it harder for the body to deliver adequate blood to your vital organs including your brain.
Balarabe Lawal blamed his collapse on exhaustion.
Inner ear imbalance
The semicircular canals of the inner ear loop in three different directions. As fluid moves in the tubes, signals are sent to the brain that helps you maintain balance.
These semicircular canals may become infected or inflamed. In this case, they can send the wrong balance signals and may result in fainting.
Vasovagal
This can occur when a person experiences a stressful event. Examples include the sight of blood, emotional stress, physical trauma, emotional trauma or pain. Your heart slows down and pumps less blood, so your blood pressure drops. Then, your brain doesn’t get enough oxygenated blood, and you faint.
