DSS release Bawa

The erstwhile Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has been rapturously welcomed home by friends and family following his release from the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS after being detained for 100 days.

GWG.ng reports that he was arrested and then detained within weeks of the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu ostensibly on the allegation of corruption.

The details of the corruption allegation leveled against him were, however, never made public.

He was alleged to have resigned while in detention.

Willie Bassey, Director of Information at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, had said Bawa was suspended as a result of weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.

Among those who leveled allegations of corruption against him was the former governor of Zamfara State and Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, who accused Bawa of demanding $2 million bribe from him, an allegation which he denied.

The allegation followed claims by the EFCC that Matawalle was being investigated over multiple allegations of corruption.

Peter Afunanya, DSS spokesman, said Bawa was released on Wednesday.

“DSS confirms release of former EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, a  few hours ago (today 25th October, 2023)”

A video of Bawa being welcomed by his wives and children has since gone viral.

With his release, focus will now be put on Mr Godwin Emefiele, the erstwhile governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN who was also reported to have resigned while in the custody of the DSS.
