The N5b proposal for the purchase of a presidential yacht as provisioned in the 2023 Supplementary Budget has been removed by the House of Representatives and the money transferred to augment the Students Loans fund.

GWG.ng reports that the supplementary budget was passed on Tuesday by the House following the adoption of the report of the House Committee on Appropriations, presented by the chairman, Rep Abubakar Bichi.

The report was adopted by the House sitting as the Committee of Supply.

Speaking to journalists after the passage of the budget, Bichi explained that the proposal for the presidential yacht was removed by the House of Representatives committee and the funding transferred to add to the proposals for Students Loans.

It would be recalled that the proposal by President Bola Tinubu to the House of Representatives had included provisions of N1.5 billion on vehicles for the office of the First Lady, N5 billion on a presidential yacht, and another N12.5 billion on the presidential air fleet.

The proposals have inflamed social media with several Nigerians denouncing the plans as anti-people.

Presidential spokesman had earlier on Thursday announced that the president did not endorse the presidential yacht in the budget.

Following the passage of the bill, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced that the president would sign the bill on Friday.
