Chelsea, Man City Facing Possible Threats After Everton Points Deduction

The landscape of the Premier League faces potential upheaval as Everton’s 10-point deduction for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations sets a precedent that could implicate Chelsea and Manchester City GWG.ng reports.

After Everton was found to exceed the Premier League’s £105 million threshold for losses over three years, the club was sanctioned with a 10-point deduction, effective immediately.

Stefan Borson, a former financial advisor to Manchester City, contends that Everton’s penalty establishes a worrisome precedent for City and Chelsea, both confronting allegations of FFP breaches. Manchester City faces 115 alleged breaches, while Chelsea may undergo scrutiny regarding payments linked to former owner Roman Abramovich.

Borson expressed reservations about the severity of Everton’s punishment, suggesting potential relegation-inducing consequences for Chelsea and Manchester City if proven guilty of the FFP rules. He urged a reevaluation of Chelsea’s strategy, emphasizing that the January transfer window could witness intriguing developments.

The Premier League has rarely resorted to points deductions, with only two instances in history. Middlesbrough received a three-point deduction in 1996/97 for failing to fulfill a fixture, and in 2010, Portsmouth suffered a nine-point deduction for entering administration. Both clubs were unable to avoid relegation.

Everton has announced its intention to appeal the perceived “harsh” sanction, emphasizing its openness and transparency throughout the process. The club disputes the finding that it failed to act with utmost good faith, considering the sanction excessively severe and not a reasonable reflection of the evidence presented.
