Obaseki’s Successor: PDP Chairman, Aziegbemi Reacts As He Comes Under New Attack

Just a day after the unveiling of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) schedule for the Edo State 2024 gubernatorial election, party figures have launched an attack on Dr Tony Aziegbemi, the state chairman with a demand for his resignation over what they claim as his biased opinion on the candidate of the party.

Aziegbemi, has, however, strongly rebuffed the attack insisting that he has a personal view which should be respected.

The call follows a widely circulated video where Aziegbemi was seen to be giving his preference for the governorship candidate to emerge from Edo Central.

GWG.ng reports that Aziegbemi, a longstanding ground operator for deceased PDP leader, Chief Tony Anenih is also from Edo Central. Detractors argue that his stance echoes the actions of the former National Chairman, Dr. Iyorcha Ayu, who fell into controversy after he reportedly endorsed the actions of a presidential candidate last year.

In the video, Aziegbemi was observed urging PDP members to align with the governor’s choice, emphasizing the need for a candidate from Edo Central.

Responding on behalf of party leaders in Oredo local government area, Mr. Martins Osakue accused Aziegbemi of neglecting his role and pursuing personal agendas.

The leaders in Oredo who are advocating for a fair exercise claim that the chairman’s biased stance necessitates his honorable resignation. Alternatively, they call on the National Working Committee (NWC) to address the matter, pointing to the precedent set in the case of the National Secretary.

In response to the demand, Aziegbemi has defended his statement as an example of democracy in action, clarifying that he was expressing a personal wish for the next governor to come from Edo Central. He asserts that the final decision rests with the delegates, guided by the principles of fairness, equity, and justice inherent in the spirit of Edo.

GWG.ng reports that attacks on Aziegbemi come in the face of the division of the PDP State Executive Committee, SEC of the party with most of the members aligned to Chief Dan Orbih, national vice-chairman, South-South as against Aziegbemi who is aligned to Governor Obaseki.
