Senator Puts Obaseki On The Spot Over N7bn ‘Spent’ On Diesel In 3 Months

Senator Monday Okpebholo, representing Edo Central, has put the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration on the spot over the N5bn post-petrol subsidy palliative allocated to Edo State by the Federal Government.

The senator also known as ‘Akpakomiza,’ has also put the Obaseki administration on the spot over the alleged expenditure of N7bn on diesel for fueling Edo City Transport (ECTS) buses in just three months. Responding to the claims, Governor Obaseki’s Chief Press Secretary, Andrew Okungbowa, said the allegations were grievous, and that the state government would address them in a press conference soon.

Speaking during the 25th priestly anniversary and book launch of Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Theophilus Idebaneria Itaman in Uromi, Senator Okpebholo criticized how state funds were allocated and spent, accusing Obaseki of misappropriating resources and terming the diesel expenditure for the free transportation program a “total scam.”

He called for accountability and efficiency in resource allocation by Governor Obaseki.

Senator Okpebholo also used the occasion to donate 10 desktop and laptop computers at the book launch.

It will be recalled that Governor Obaseki had remained silent on the actual position of the Federal Government’s N5bn palliative to the state, including trucks of grains that were released to state governments.

However, he announced that his administration had placed orders for some mass transit buses but that the buses were yet to be delivered.

GWG reports that the current buses in the fleet of ECTS were bought during the administration of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

GWG.ng reports that the Obaseki administration had in the wake of the increase of fuel prices announced a free bus scheme to ameliorate the hardship on the citizenry. That scheme had recently been extended to next year.
