Suspected Iranian Drone Hits Israeli-Owned Ship
An Israeli-owned cargo ship in the Indian Ocean sustained minor damage in a suspected drone attack by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as confirmed by a US defense official.
The incident involving a Malta-flagged, French-operated container ship managed by an Israeli-affiliated company occurred on Friday, with no reported injuries.
Maritime security company Ambrey highlighted that the ship’s tracking transmissions had ceased before the attack, suggesting premeditation.
This event occurred just a week after Huthi rebels, supported by Iran, seized an Israel-linked cargo ship in the Red Sea. Ambrey reported another incident where Huthis warned a tanker off Yemen’s Red Sea port of an imminent attack if instructions were not followed. The Huthis, aligned with Iran, have been conducting drone and missile strikes targeting Israel since October, marking an escalation in regional tensions.
The backdrop to these maritime incidents is the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. In response to attacks by Hamas militants, Israel has pledged to “crush” the group, which controls the Gaza Strip.
The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with the Huthi rebels pledging further maritime attacks until Israel halts its Gaza campaign. The situation underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region and the interconnectedness of maritime security issues.
