Gunfire erupted at the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) convention in Abuja on Friday, resulting in injuries to numerous students. The injured individuals are currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital.

The convention at the Old Parade Ground was to elect a new NANS executive to replace the outgoing leadership led by Usman Barambu. The shootings, which commenced on Thursday, persisted into Friday at the convention venue near the Defense Headquarters in Abuja.

The violence reportedly began when thugs supporting a particular candidate initiated attacks on opposition delegates. Videos from the event showed students fleeing for safety amid the intense gunfire on Friday at the NANS convention in Abuja.

The shootings came to a halt after the intervention of security agencies. The incident raises concerns about the safety and security of students participating in such gatherings, highlighting the need for measures to prevent violence and ensure peaceful elections within student associations.
