ATBU shut down

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi has been shut down for one week due to a protest by students triggered by the killing of a final-year Geology student, Joseph Agabaidu, allegedly by suspected armed robbers.

Zailani Bappa, the Director of the Media unit of ATBU disclosed on Monday that the decision to shut down was made to forestall potential violence following the students’ peaceful demonstration over their peer’s death.

According to the ATBU spokesman, with the decision to shut down the school, all students have been instructed to promptly leave the Yelwa and Gubi campuses. The university management will consider reopening when the students demonstrate a return to ‘their senses.’

Bappa stated, “This is to announce that ATBU has been closed down immediately from today, (Monday), 4th December 2023. The closure is for one week initially to see how the students will behave well.”

“The Security Department of the university has been directed to ensure that the students leave the two premises immediately and close all the hostels. If any student refuses to leave the campus, measures will be taken against such.”

Bappa clarified that the deceased student, Joseph Agabaidu, resided off-campus, and the university had limited knowledge of students living outside its premises. The Security Department promptly reported the murder to the Police for thorough investigation.

Despite the resolve of the ATBU to ease tension and facilitate a police investigation, the students remained defiant, threatening violence leading to the decision on shut down.

Bappah assured that the university management is committed to collaborating with security agents to uncover the circumstances surrounding the murder.

“In spite of the efforts of the management to douse the tension and allow Police to investigate and get to the bottom of the master, the Students refused to be pacified threatening to go violent,” the ATBU spokesman said in conveying the news on the shut down.

He emphasized that the management will continue to prioritize the welfare of the students and urged them to cooperate for their well-being.

“It is hoped that before the end of the one week closure, the Students must have calmed down, tension gone down and normalcy returned.”
