The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Tuesday announced that it has initiated an investigation into the alleged bribery incident involving one of its officers at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

The National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, revealed that the officer in question was accused of soliciting a N5,000 bribe from a passenger to expedite customs procedures for travel abroad. Assuring the public of accountability, Maiwada emphasized that the service is committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident transpired at the New Terminal within the departure hall of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. The recording reveals an inappropriate request for N5000 in exchange for expeditious processing of customs procedures,” Maiwada stated.

Confirming the officer’s affiliation with the Nigeria Customs Service and condemning the bribery demand as an unprofessional conduct, Maiwada underscored that a comprehensive investigation of the bribery allegation is underway and appropriate actions will be taken based on the findings.

Maiwada urged Nigerians to promptly report any acts of misconduct or corruption among customs officers, emphasizing that such reports are crucial in maintaining the integrity of the service. He further emphasized the NCS’s unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and adherence to the highest ethical standards.

“Such behavior is entirely inconsistent with the core values of our service, and we are resolute in maintaining a transparent and accountable Customs operation. The outcome of the investigation will be communicated to the public at the earliest opportunity,” Maiwada assured.
