Peruzzi: Why I Left Medical School In Fifth Year For Music

Nigerian artiste and songwriter Peruzzi recently shared insights into his unique journey during an episode of the Zero Conditions Podcast. He explained the pivotal moment when he decided to leave medical school in Ukraine during his final year, citing the psychological exhaustion he felt while pursuing Medicine and Surgery. Despite nearing the completion of his studies, Peruzzi chose to redirect his focus to his true passion – music.

In essence, Peruzzi underscored his dedication to following his heart, opting for a path of musical expression rather than adhering to the conventional route of completing his medical school.

This candid revelation offers a glimpse into the personal and transformative choices that have shaped Peruzzi’s artistic journey, diverging from the traditional expectations of academia.

“I got tired for real, for real. I never felt like that in my life. I was done, like everything about me, in my head, I was done with medicine. And that was when I was about to start my final year so it was a lot. I had written my first MD already at the time. It wasn’t about how long I had left at the time, it was about me not wanting to do anything again. I didn’t want to do it anymore,” said Peruzzi.

Peruzzi was at the medical school at Odesa National University in Ukraine up to his fifth year. The mounting pressure of Medical School led Peruzzi to make a pivotal decision, prompting his return to Nigeria. During this transition, he candidly shared his feelings and reasons with his mother, who, in response, set a single condition for his return.

He continued: “I really got tired, my entire being was tired so I left on the first of January and I didn’t even have my passport, I had lost it. So I went to the embassy and they gave me a travel letter because I needed to leave that urgently. When I got back the only person I told was my mum. I was able to explain how bad I was feeling and she said I should make sure to come back with my school result and everything from the first year to show that I was in school so I did.”

Upon returning to Nigeria, Peruzzi found himself unable to disclose the reasons to his father, who remained uninformed by his mother as well. During this period, murmurs circulated among members of his father’s church, speculating that his presence at home during a non-holiday season indicated a departure from his studies. Despite the assumptions and his decision to drop out, Peruzzi expressed a lack of remorse about the path he had chosen.
