Governor of Ekiti increases wages for workers

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has given the green light to a temporary wage increase lasting six months for all workers and pensioners in the state. This move is aimed at mitigating the impact of the ongoing economic challenges.

Workers in Ekiti State according to the directive will receive an additional N15,000 per month, while pensioners will benefit from a monthly increment of N10,000 according to the temporary provisions. Furthermore, outstanding salaries from July 2018 owed to local government workers and primary school teachers in all 16 local government areas will be settled.

The temporary wage boost will undergo a review after six months or upon reaching an agreement on a permanent minimum wage for workers. As outlined by the Governor’s Special Adviser, Yinka Oyebode, the increase for pensioners is effective immediately, starting from December 2023.

Governor Oyebanji’s decision reflects his commitment to prioritizing the welfare of workers and addressing lingering entitlement issues from previous administrations. Earlier measures implemented by the governor to alleviate the impact of subsidy removal included settling outstanding benefits, extending the minimum wage to senior workers (levels 14-17), and providing shuttle buses for workers and students.

Commending the dedication and understanding of Ekiti workers, Governor Oyebanji emphasized their pivotal role as the “engine room” of the government. He reassured them that his administration would persist in prioritizing their well-being within the constraints of available resources.
