The Commissioner of Police for Oyo State Command, Adebola Hamzat, has taken decisive action by ordering the immediate dismissal of two Special Constables for engaging in the extortion of a female Dutch tourist.

The dismissed police constables, identified as Jimoh Lukman and Kareem Fatai, were publicly paraded at the Oyo State Police Command in Eleyele, Ibadan following the viral video of their extortion of the Dutch tourist.

Their dismissal stemmed from an incident where the two police officers were caught on video demanding money from a Dutch tourist along the highway that was seen as an act of extortion.

The tourist, riding a power bike from the Netherlands to Abuja, became a victim of the officers’ extortion attempt, as captured in the viral video.

To confirm their exit from constabulary service, the disgraced officers were stripped of their Nigerian Police uniform. The Police Commissioner stated that their dismissal followed the recommendation of an orderly room investigation. He emphasized the Inspector General of Police’s zero-tolerance policy for corruption within the Nigerian police, condemning such embarrassing conduct and making it clear that it would not be tolerated from any officer.

Moreover, CP Adebola clarified that the two dismissed constables would not face prosecution in court, as they were not originally trained officers of the Nigerian police. This decisive action underscores the commitment to maintaining integrity and weeding out corruption within the police force.

Extortion has unfortunately become a widespread issue among Nigerian police officers, resulting in the violation of citizens’ rights in various areas. Instances abound where officers, tasked with safeguarding citizens, resort to aggressive actions when individuals resist complying with such unprecedented acts. The hope is that this recent dismissal and decisive action against officers involved will contribute to an improvement in the system. There’s an optimistic belief that such measures will lead to better protection of citizens’ rights going forward.
