TUC Urges Tinubu To Intervene, Calls For Immediate Action On Naira Scarcity At CBN

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has issued a plea to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to intervene and address the scarcity of the Naira in the country by calling the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to order.

The TUC expressed deep concern over the acute shortage of the national currency, which has resulted in significant hardships for citizens who find it challenging to access Naira through banks and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

In a statement signed by TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo and Secretary General Comrade Nuhu Toro, the labor center conveyed its growing alarm and dismay at the sudden and inexplicable scarcity of the Naira across the country.

The statement highlighted that citizens are encountering difficulties obtaining Naira from banks and ATMs, leading them to resort to extortionist Point of Sale (POS) operators who charge exorbitant rates.

The TUC expressed amazement at the apparent difficulty faced by the Central Bank of Nigeria in making the national currency available to the working people and citizens. The statement deemed the situation unfortunate and unacceptable, emphasizing that Nigerians continue to endure needless excruciating hardships caused by what it described as insensitive and heartless actions and inactions of government agents and agencies.

The statement further questioned the plight of ordinary Nigerians, especially during the solemn Yuletide season, and called for prompt and decisive action from the Tinubu administration. The TUC urged the government to ensure that monetary and fiscal policies are aligned with the interests of the long-suffering people.

In a resolute tone, the TUC warned that if the Naira scarcity persists, they would be compelled to explore their “usual options” when the working people are pushed to the wall. The statement concluded with a call for timely action, emphasizing the adage, “A stitch in time saves nine,” and a rallying cry, “Aluta Continua, Victoria Acerta.”
