The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced that the automation of applications for Nigerian passports will begin on January 8, 2024.

From that date, Nigerians will be able to apply and complete their passport application process online without human contact.

“We are good to go live,” Tunji-Ojo said Monday in Abuja during an inspection of facilities of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) alongside the Comptroller General (CG) of the Service, Wura-Ola Adepoju.

“We are starting the training and on January 8, the solution will be live and direct for Nigerians to have a good feel, a sweet experience based on the Renewed Hope of Mr President.

“We have been able to reduce human contact in passport acquisition to the minimum,” the minister said, adding that the new initiative will enhance the security architecture of the country as well as the comfort and convenience of Nigerians” the minister said.

Ahead of the translation of this new development into reality, Tunji-ojo confirmed that he visited the Nigerian Immigration Service to see things for himself.

“Yesterday, I inspected facilities of the Nigerian Immigration alongside the Comptroller General of the Service, Wura-Ola Adepoju.”

Some responded to this new initiative on the application process for the Nigerian passport with mixed reactions. While some lauded the effort others questioned the genuine applicability.

James Agada, an X user said:

“It is okay. I did this application thing two years ago and my only human contact was to go to be captured which turned into a nightmare.  Maybe this is a new one but if it is successful, we will be grateful.”

Kabir said:

“With that fully taken up, no doubt it would be a big plus for the scorecard of this Administration . Congratulations PBAT and Nigeria !!! May it be sustained”

Isa Bello commended, “Hon.Minister, this  will be a very laudable venture if the people in  charge will allow it to work.”
