Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Yemi Alade has firmly rebuffed a fan’s attempt to pit her against fellow music icon Tiwa Savage. The interaction unfolded on the social media platform X, when Alade shared her excitement about performing at the opening ceremony of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.

A fan, using the handle @ThatNigerianlad, tried to fuel a divisive narrative by claiming Alade’s superiority over Tiwa Savage. The fan’s comment, “U better than tiwa,” prompted a swift and measured response from Alade.

In her reply, she wisely quashed the comparison, stating, “Comparison is the thief of Joy. We’re both winning…. celebrate and support us all.” Alade’s words not only diffused the potential rivalry but also emphasized the significance of celebrating and supporting all artistes without fostering divisive comparisons.

Alade, affectionately known as Mama Africa, was slated to perform at the 60,000-capacity Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara, contributing to the AFCON opening ceremony. The performance included her participation in the rendition of the theme song ‘Akwaba,’ which translates to ‘welcome’ in the Baoule language of Côte d’Ivoire.

On a separate note, Tiwa Savage, often referred to as Mummy Jam Jam, had been in the spotlight for a different incident involving a disagreement with Nigerian music heavyweight Davido.

Despite attempts by some fans to manufacture a sense of competition between the two megastars, Yemi Alade’s response firmly communicated that there is ample room for mutual respect and collective success within the music industry. Alade’s stance not only promotes unity but also highlights the need to appreciate each artist’s unique contributions without fostering unnecessary rivalries.
