The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has adopted direct mode of primary for the election of its candidate for the Edo State governorship election and with it limiting the role of godfathers and moneybags in the process.

GWG.ng reports that the APC has fixed its primary to pick its candidate for the election for February 17. The election as fixed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is to hold on September 21, 2024.

Speaking to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja, after a meeting between the National Working Committee (NWC) and stakeholders in Edo State which ended late Monday night, the APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Duro Meseko, disclosed that there were as many as 29 aspirants in the race.

While ruling out zoning of the party’s ticket to a particular zone in the state, he added that the NWC was still trying to forge a consensus by prevailing on some aspirants to step down for a few to slug it out at the primaries.

According to Meseko, the party is determined to reclaim the state from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and would adopt all democratic strategies to win the poll.

GWG.ng reports that the option for direct primary is bound to excite some of the aspirants with name recognition being more favoured.

While the decision is bound to favour some, the party’s automatic delegates who would otherwise have been the object of lobbying and bribery by the aspirants are bound to be displeased with the decision.
