PDP protest in Nasarawa

Following the Supreme Court’s judgment affirming the election of Governor Abdullahi Sule, a protest by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters has erupted in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.

The Lafia-Jos Road has been completely blocked as the PDP supporters burned tyres in front of the state secretariat of the party, thus barricading the road.

The protest has forced motorists to use alternative routes within Lafia, the state capital.

There is a security presence restoring calm and ensuring no escalation while shops and business centres including schools within the Lafia metropolis have abruptly closed.

The Supreme Court had on Friday upheld Abdullhi Sule as the duly elected Governor of Nasarawa state.

The apex court dismissed the appeal of David Ombugadu of the PDP for being unable to prove his case.

Ombugadu and Sule had been in a running legal tussle over the outcome of the March 18, 2023 governorship election in Nasarawa State.

While the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC had returned Sule as governor, the Election Tribunal had voided his election, a decision that was upturned by the Court of Appeal and now upheld by the Supreme Court.

GWG.ng reports that before now protest had shadowed many decisions concerning Nasarawa since the March election.
