Algeria Sack Coach Belmadi After AFCON Exit
Algeria has parted ways with their coach Djamel Belmadi following their unexpected exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The two-time AFCON winners suffered a shocking defeat to Mauritania in their final group stage match in the Ivory Coast, leading to an early end to Belmadi’s tenure.
The decision to terminate Belmadi’s contract was reached through amicable discussions between the coach and the Algerian football federation president, Walid Sadi. Sadi expressed the bitter implications of the team’s elimination and emphasized the need for a change in leadership.
This development aligns with a trend in the ongoing AFCON, as other teams like Ivory Coast and Ghana also underwent coaching changes. Hosts Ivory Coast removed coach Jean-Louis Gasset midway through the competition, while Ghana dismissed Chris Hughton following their exit.
Despite clinching their second AFCON title in Egypt in 2019, Algeria faced disappointment in the previous edition in Cameroon, exiting in the group stage with just one point and one goal scored. The current campaign mirrored the team’s struggles, with draws against Angola and Burkina Faso in Group D, leaving them needing a point against Mauritania in Bouake to progress to the knockout phase.
The decision to part ways with Belmadi reflects the high expectations placed on the Algerian national team and the desire for a fresh approach to future competitions. The challenges faced in recent AFCON editions highlight the complexities of international football, where success and setbacks are intertwined on the journey to securing continental glory.
