AFCON: Obi Arrives As Nigeria Name Starting Eleven Against Angola (Video)

Why Obi ignored LP National convention

2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi has arrived Ivory Coast to watch the Nigerian Angolan quarter final AFCON match saying that Nigeria must promote sports for the unity it gives and the spin-offs in terms of economic growth.

GWG.ng reports that Obi who spoke to newsmen as he arrived the Ivory Coast commercial capital, Abidjan as Nigeria named its starting team for the AFCON cracker against the Southern Africa oil giants.

Obi who said that countries like Brazil had used sports to boost investment.

He said:

“The country needs to do more to have more stars. What they have done so far is commendable and they have my prayers and support. For me it’s prayers for them because their success is the success of the country

“Because they have become one of our most united force and it is critical that we invest in sports. It is critical for us. Countries after country like Brazil have used sports critically for development. It is an area of development that we need to invest.

“When I talk about investment I talk about education, health and pulling people out of poverty and that includes investing in sports. We can do a lot in sports. Congratulations to Nigeria, they have done very well and that is why I am here.”

Meanwhile, in the trail of the arrival of Obi for the AFCON match, it emerged that Stanley Nwabali has recovered to start in goal for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their quarter final match against Angola on Friday.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper was a doubt after being stretchered off the pitch in the round of 16 win over Cameroon in the 80th minute.

However, uncertainty trailed the Chippa United shotstopper’s possible presence in goal against Angola with reports of pain and light training in the media.

Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro also added in his press conference that Nwabali would require a late fitness test, and his presence indicates he passed the test.

The presence of Nwabali in the starting XI means Nigeria remain unchanged from their last match. Victor Osimhen leads the attack and will be supported by two-goal hero Ademola Lookman.

Iwobi will continue his deep midfield role, Calvin Bassey adding steel to a defence led by captain William Troost-Ekong.

Nigeria can become the first nation in the semi final of AFCON 2023 if they defeat Angola at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny stadium in Abidjan from 6pm.
