Senate President Godswill Akpabio has addressed the government of Germany, expressing grave concerns over their decision to deport 12,000 illegal migrants of Nigerian origin.

In a meeting with the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annette Gunther, Akpabio highlighted the potential repercussions of such deportations on Nigeria’s already delicate security situation.

Akpabio underscored the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, emphasizing that mass deportations could further aggravate the existing issues. He pointed out the country’s struggles with infiltration from neighboring nations and the persistent threats posed by Boko Haram in the North East. Akpabio suggested that these challenges might have been mitigated had Nigeria received support from key international players, including Germany.

Akpabio drew attention to the political instability in neighboring regions like Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, which has prompted individuals in Germany to falsely claim Nigerian nationality to avoid deportation to these crisis-prone areas. Akpabio stressed the importance of allowing Nigerian immigration officers to verify the true nationality of those being deported, ensuring that only genuine Nigerian citizens are repatriated.

In response, Ambassador Gunther acknowledged the economic ties between Nigeria and Germany, recognizing Nigeria as Germany’s second-largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa. She emphasized the need for collaboration between the two nations, highlighting their significance as the largest economies and populations on their respective continents.

This exchange reflects the complex interplay between immigration policies, security concerns, and diplomatic relations. The Senate President’s plea for understanding and cooperation underscores the intricate challenges faced by nations dealing with migration issues, balancing the need for security with the humanitarian aspects of the situation. As discussions continue, the hope is for a collaborative approach that considers the multifaceted nature of these challenges and respects the shared interests of both Nigeria and Germany.
