Jay Z Calls Out Grammys For Snubbing Beyonce In ‘Album Of The Year’ Category

Jay Z for Beyonce

Renowned American rapper, Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Corey Carter, didn’t mince words as he criticized the Grammy Awards for consistently overlooking his wife, Beyonce, in the ‘Album of the Year’ category, despite her remarkable 33 Grammy wins.

The Grammy Awards took place at the Peacock Theater and was broadcast live on GRAMMY.com and the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel. During the event, Jay-Z, at 54 years old, used his acceptance speech for the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award to shed light on what he perceived as snubs and inconsistencies in recognizing black artistes.

Standing on stage with his 12-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, Jay-Z questioned the Grammy organizers about their decision not to award Beyonce in the ‘Album of the Year’ category, emphasizing her unparalleled success with the most Grammy wins.

“We want y’all to get it right,” he asserted. “We love y’all, we love y’all, we just want y’all to get it right. At least get it close to right.”

In a candid moment, Jay-Z pointed out the contradiction that Beyonce, with the most Grammy wins, has never clinched the Album of the Year award. He urged the organizers to rethink their approach, challenging them to consider the incongruity of their own metrics.

He wrapped up his speech by encouraging persistence in both award shows and life, advising viewers to keep showing up until they receive the recognition they believe they deserve.

Beyonce, with a historic 33 Grammy wins, has been nominated six times for the coveted ‘Album of the Year’ category but has never secured the top honor. The Grammy Awards’ historical oversight of her in this category sparked conversations reminiscent of past award show controversies, such as Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift’s MTV Video Music Awards speech. Swift, who won Album of the Year at this year’s Grammys, further fueled West’s notorious interruption.
