Social critic and human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has accused President Bola Tinubu of using hunger to exploit Nigerians.

Yesufu’s assertions, shared via her X handle on Friday, suggested that President Tinubu’s purported intentions could lead to a dire situation where individuals would be compelled to compromise their principles for basic necessities like a packet of noodles.

These allegations come amidst a concerning economic landscape, with Nigeria experiencing a significant increase in inflation to 29.90 percent in January 2024, up from 28.92 percent in December 2023, primarily driven by soaring food prices.

In response to the mounting food crisis, President Tinubu recently unveiled plans to address the underlying factors contributing to the situation. However, these efforts were swiftly followed by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission’s (FCCPC) sealing of Sahad Store, a prominent supermarket in Abuja’s Garki area, on allegations of customer exploitation.

Aisha Yesufu has publicly questioned the government’s actions, particularly the crackdown on traders and the closure of warehouses. She suggests that such measures may exacerbate the plight of ordinary Nigerians already grappling with the impact of inflation and food shortages.
