Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi Uku, has been shut down following a series of violent incidents perpetrated by hoodlums targeted at students.

The Rector, Prof. Emmanuel Achuenu, delivered the somber news over the weekend, compelling students to vacate the premises immediately. The decision aims to address the escalating safety concerns that have plagued the campus, with reports of robberies, physical assaults, and even sexual violence against students.

Valuables such as handsets and laptops have been pilfered, while reports of female students falling victim to sexual assault have sent shockwaves through the community.

Chisom Gladys, an eyewitness, recounted a chilling attack where hoodlums brazenly invaded hostel rooms, terrorizing students and plundering their possessions. The ordeal reached a horrifying climax when a student was shot in the leg during a robbery, highlighting the dire consequences of the deteriorating security situation.

Meanwhile, the Students Union Government (SUG) of Delta State Polytechnic has issued a statement endorsing the management’s decision to implement a semi-semester break. This unified stance underscores the gravity of the situation and the imperative for collective action to safeguard the well-being of students.

As the polytechnic grapples with these challenges, the closure serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive security measures to be put in place to ensure the safety and security of students and staff alike. Only through concerted efforts and effective collaboration between the institution, law enforcement agencies, and the broader community can lasting solutions be found to address the scourge of criminal activities that threaten the academic environment.
