Nigerian Nurse on the Run After Alleged Botched Abortion

Authorities in Ogun State are on the hunt for a nurse in Oke-Owa, Ijebu Ode, after she allegedly performed an abortion on a woman named Deborah Sokoya, resulting in severe bleeding and hospitalization.

According to reports, Sokoya had informed her partner, Peter Balogun, that she planned to visit her elder sister, Mutiat Sokoya, in the Iperin area of Ijebu-Ode. Upon arrival, Deborah was allegedly lured by her sister to a location where the abortion procedure took place.

The failed abortion led to uncontrollable bleeding, prompting Sokoya’s admission to a hospital for urgent medical attention.

Omolola Odutola, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, revealed that preliminary investigations uncovered that Balogun, the victim’s boyfriend, had previously financed another abortion for Sokoya in 2023.

Mutiat and Balogun have been detained for questioning, while efforts are underway to apprehend the fleeing nurse and other individuals involved in the alleged abortion.

Authorities are urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of the nurse or other suspects to come forward to assist in the investigation.

GWG.ng reports that the case of the Ogun State based nurse now on the run brings to the fore the extent to which the abortion industry has grown despite the fact that the procedure remains largely illegal in the country.
