A 35-year-old motorcyclist, James Sunday, has been remanded in police custody by a Magistrate Court in Akure, the capital of Ondo state, following allegations of murdering his wife’s friend, Justinah Sunday, 42.

Chief Magistrate T. O. Olusola-Olujobi ordered the remand of the accused, with Police Prosecutor Taiwo Oniyere presenting the case.

According to Oniyere, the defendant allegedly unlawfully killed Justinah on Sunday, March 13, 2024, at No. 47, Ijoka Street, Ondo, within the Ondo State Magisterial District. The accused reportedly strangled the victim with a rope, leading to her death.

The alleged offence violates Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The prosecutor detailed that the deceased, a close friend of the defendant’s wife, entrusted him with delivering cow meat worth N250,000 to a customer. However, the accused purportedly diverted the meat to his home. Subsequently, he threatened the deceased whenever she asked for payment until allegedly committing the murder.

In response, the defendant stated that he had known the deceased for over nine years in Ile-Oluji town but claimed not to have had contact with her since they separated and relocated to Ondo.

Oniyere requested the court to remand the defendant in the Olokuta Correctional Centre pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP.

Defense counsel A.F. Falana sought time to file a reply to the remand application.

Chief Magistrate Olusola-Olujobi ordered the defendant’s remand in police custody and adjourned the case till April 18, 2024, for ruling.
