Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South Senatorial District and serving as Senate Minority Leader, criticized the call for the resignation of the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, as untimely and inappropriate.

This reaction stemmed from a call for Damagum’s resignation by Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga, representing Ideato Federal Constituency in Imo State. Ikenga accused the National Chairman of PDP of failing to convene a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting since replacing Senator Iyorchia Ayu.

In a statement released by his media adviser, Emmanuel Eche’Ofun John, Senator Moro dismissed the call as Ikenga’s personal opinion, stressing that it did not represent the views of PDP federal lawmakers, particularly PDP Senators.

Moro deemed the timing of the call, just days before the anticipated NEC meeting, as unnecessary and likely to cause unnecessary tension within the party.

Regarding the scheduled NEC meeting, Senator Moro emphasized its significance in allowing members to express their opinions on party affairs and national issues. He anticipated robust discussions on matters concerning both the party and Nigeria.

Addressing the issue of the National Chairman’s seat, Senator Moro emphasized its critical nature. He argued against suggestions to open the seat to other regions, insisting that according to the PDP constitution, vacancies are filled by deputy chairmen from the same zone as the embattled National Chairman.

Moro cautioned against actions that could jeopardize the party’s unity and reputation, advocating for circumspection among NEC members to ensure the party’s continued strength and relevance.

Regarding the APC government, Senator Moro criticized what he perceived as a lack of direction and effectiveness in governance since assuming power in 2015. He lamented the current state of affairs in the country, attributing the challenges to governance failures across the board.

“Nigerians are hurting. The cost of living is so high that Nigerians cannot afford two-square meal in a day. Even the reported appreciation of the naira against the dollar, which is a mind game being played on Nigerians by the APC government, has no impact on the prices of things in the market. Things are getting worse by the day and in the face of this grinding suffering, the government has gone ahead to increase electricity tariff. I think this is the height of insensitivity,” Moro lamented.

Speaking on opposition politics, Senator Moro expressed disagreement with the notion that the PDP has not been actively engaged in opposition politics.

According to him, “Opposition is not fighting. We are not going to war with ourselves but we have been voicing out the ills of the APC government.”

Regarding disciplinary actions against party members who have acted against the interests of the party, Senator Moro stated that the NEC would not simply compile names of such individuals while sitting in Abuja.

“Relevant organs of the party have relevant responsibilities to discharge to the party. NEC cannot sit in Abuja and write names of party member A or B that acted to undermine the party in the last elections, that’s the duty of the various ward EXCOs,” he said.

Senator Moro voiced confidence that the PDP would regain its winning momentum in the upcoming election. He emphasized the importance of members coming together to strategize and chart a path towards restoring the party’s former glory.
