Kaduna Begins Probe Of El-Rufai

The Kaduna House of Assembly has established a committee to probe the financial records of the state during the eight-year administration of Governor Nasir el-Rufai.

GWG.ng reports that the committee conducting the probe is charged with assessing loans, grants, and projects spanning from 2015 to 2023, the time encompassing when el-Rufai was governor of the state.

During this period, the committee will delve into various aspects of governance, including financial transactions, to gain insight into the state’s fiscal management under el-Rufai’s administration. The objective is to evaluate the utilization of resources, project implementation, and any associated contractual obligations.

GWG.ng reports that Governor Uba Sani disclosed on March 30 that upon assuming office, his administration inherited substantial debt and contractual liabilities from the previous administration. Specifically, the inherited liabilities include a debt of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual obligations, underscoring the importance of the committee’s investigation into the state’s financial affairs under el-Rufai’s leadership.

Speaking during a town hall meeting, Sani also said he has not borrowed “a kobo in the last nine months”.

However, he emphasized that the substantial debt burden is significantly impacting the state’s portion of the monthly federation allocation, a move that may have inspired the probe of the el-Rufai administration by the Kaduna State House of Assembly.
