Ogun State Appoints Chess Master Tunde Onakoya as Sports Ambassador Ahead of National Sports Festival

In a move to promote chess and recognize exceptional talent, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has appointed renowned chess master Tunde Onakoya as the state’s sports ambassador.

The appointment comes ahead of the National Sports Festival, scheduled to take place in the state in nine months.

On Thursday, April 25, 2024, Governor Abiodun hosted Tunde Onakoya at his office in Oke Mosan, where he honored the chess master for his outstanding achievements, including his recent Guinness World Record for a 60-hour marathon chess game.

As part of the appointment, Governor Abiodun announced that chess will be featured in the upcoming National Sports Festival, and the state will launch the Ogun State Chess Competition, designed by Tunde Onakoya himself. The winner of the competition will receive the Tunde Onakoya Prize, recognizing the chess master’s dedication and leadership in promoting the game in the state.

This appointment and recognition of Tunde Onakoya’s achievements are a testament to Ogun State’s commitment to supporting and celebrating sporting excellence. The inclusion of chess in the National Sports Festival is also a significant step towards promoting the game and providing opportunities for young players to develop their skills.
