Court Convicts Woman for Forging Late Abba Kyari’s Signature
A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Gwagwalada, Abuja, has found Mrs. Ramat Mercy Mba guilty of forgery and cheating, involving the signature of the late Abba Kyari, former Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari.
Justice Ibrahim Mohammad delivered the verdict, convicting Mba on four counts of cheating and forgery, while discharging her on one count of felony.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had arraigned Mba in June 2022 on a five-count charge, alleging she fraudulently induced job seekers and forged documents, including a letterhead paper of the Office of the Chief of Staff, to secure employment for them in government agencies like FIRS, NASRDA, and ICPC.
During the trial, the ICPC’s prosecutor, Mr. Hamza Sani, presented evidence showing how Mba dishonestly collected money from victims, promising to secure employment for them using Kyari as cover. Documentary evidence revealed she forged a letter, purportedly from the late Abba Kyari, requesting the recruitment of three individuals by ICPC. However, the late Chief of Staff denied authorizing the letter in a written correspondence tendered in court.
Justice Mohammad convicted Mba on counts 1, 2, 3, and 5, related to cheating and forgery, and deferred sentencing to May 16, 2024. He ordered her remand in Suleja Correctional Centre. This verdict serves as a warning to individuals engaging in fraudulent activities, and demonstrates the commitment of the ICPC to combating corruption.
