The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a nationwide strike threat, expressing dismay over the Federal Government’s failure to appoint Governing Councils for Federal Universities.

During a press briefing at the University of Abuja, ASUU criticized the perceived lack of concern from the President Bola Tinubu-led administration regarding academic matters in Nigerian Federal Universities.

The union also opposed the 35% salary increment for professors and the 25% salary increment for other academics, viewing them as potentially reversible wage awards.

ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, emphasized that the union had given the government ample time to address these issues.

Additionally, ASUU raised concerns over the government’s failure to appoint members to the Governing Councils of Federal universities, considering it a breach of established university principles.

This comes after the National Universities Commission (NUC) announced the dissolution of governing councils of all federal universities and boards of other agencies and parastatals in the country, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.
