Tournament hosts Germany began their Euro 2024 campaign in superb style as they dismantled Scotland 5-1 at the Allianz Arena, the home ground of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

Hunting a record fourth European title and first major trophy after a barren decade, scored through Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala and a Kai Havertz penalty before Niclas Fuellkrug and Emre Can added two more late in the second half. Scotland, who had defender Ryan Porteous sent off on the stroke of halftime, got on the scoresheet in the 87th minute courtesy of Antonio Ruediger’s deflected own goal.

Germany next face Hungary on Wednesday before taking on Switzerland in their final Group A match. The Scots, who lost Porteous for a studs-up challenge on Ilkay Gundogan that earned the hosts their penalty, must quickly go back to the drawing board if they are to make it past the group stage for the first time ever in a major tournament.

Here are 5 Key Facts From The Game As Germany beat Scotland 5-1 in the first match of EURO 2024:

99% – Toni Kroos completed 99% of his passes against Scotland (101/102); the highest completion rate on record (since 1980) by any player to attempt 100+ passes in a game at the EUROs.

5 – Scotland have conceded five goals in a match for the first time since a friendly against the USA in May 2012 (1-5), and first in a competitive match since November 2003 in a EURO qualifier v Netherlands (0-6).

1 – Ryan Porteous is the first player to be sent off on his EUROs debut since Aleksandar Dragovic for Austria v Hungary in 2016, and is the first Scotland player to receive a major tournament (World Cup/EUROs) red card since Craig Burley v Morocco in the 1998 World Cup.

2 – In Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala (both 21), Germany have become the first side ever to have two players aged 21 or younger score for them in the same match at the EUROs.

21 – Aged 21 years and 42 days, Florian Wirtz has become the youngest player to score for Germany at the finals and to score the opening goal at any European championship tournament.
