Labour Leaders Under Fire For Praising Tinubu After Accepting Reduced Minimum Wage (Video)
By Gideon Ayeni
A video has sparked outrage on social media, showing labour union members celebrating and singing praises of President Tinubu after agreeing to a proposed minimum wage of N70,000.
The video has drawn widespread criticism, with many netizens expressing shock and disappointment that the unions accepted a significantly lower amount than their initial proposal of N250,000.
Watch the video below;
GWG.ng reports that the labour unions had initially vowed not to accept anything less than their proposed amount, but they appeared to have backtracked on this promise. The video showed the union members jubilating and thanking President Tinubu for the new minimum wage approval, which has left many wondering what led to the sudden change of heart.
In an earlier statement, the union had defended their decision, citing the additional incentives and the promise of a three-year review as reasons for accepting the offer.
However, this explanation has done little to placate the anger and frustration of many Nigerians who feel that the unions have let them down especially when the price of goods and commodities are higher than the proposed minimum wage.
The comment section is filled with criticism and surprise, with many questioning the unions’ decision and wondering what happened to their initial resolve. This controversy has sparked a wider debate about the effectiveness of labour unions in Nigeria and their ability to advocate for workers’ rights.
Read some netizens’ reactions below;
@olayinka_094: All the mouth, they can’t even bargain 100k. Well they agreed to the money which can be paid realistically.
@sundaonyeka98: Make them keep wyning themselves, organized labour my foot. #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria
@aliveblessed: 70k ? But I saw a post showing one yam is costing nearly 12k 😩
@fido1hn: 70k and they’re clapping and hailing him, for doing the bare minimum.
@vibes_n_clout: He could have approved this several months ago but he sees an impending protest and decides to pretend to be a good person.
We reject him and his minimum wage.
@noseydr: I just checked what 70k will get me on Lemfi app and its £34. Nigeria, u re wicked!
As the discussion continues, it’s with no doubt that the labour unions have a lot of explaining to do to regain the trust and confidence of the people they represent.
