Outrage Over Photo Of Hungry Man In Counter-Protest Against #BadGovernance Organisers
By Gideon Ayeni
As Nigerian youths prepare for a national protest tagged ‘End Bad Governance’ on August 1st, a counter-protest by some youths and women to beef up support for government has sparked significant online reactions.
The upcoming protest, organized in response to the country’s ongoing economic hardships and escalating food prices, aims to address the grievances of many Nigerians.
GWG.ng had previously reported that supporters of the counter-protest took to the streets to voice their opposition to the planned ‘End Bad Governance’ rally. Among the images that have since gone viral is a photo of a man wearing a white T-shirt and cap emblazoned with the slogan, “NO TO PROTEST DIALOGUE IS THE BEST OPTION.” The man’s attire, particularly his stained traditional trousers and worn-out sandals, has drawn considerable attention and criticism from netizens.
In the viral images, the man was seen holding some money and papers, further fueling the online debate. Social media users have been quick to point out the irony of his participation in the counter-protest, given his apparent financial struggles.

The counter-protest comes at a time when many Nigerians are expressing frustration over the increasing cost of living and economic instability. The planned ‘End Bad Governance’ protest on August 1st is seen by many as a crucial step towards demanding accountability and better governance from the country’s leaders.
As the date for the national protest approaches, the contrasting demonstrations highlight the deep divisions within Nigerian society regarding the best path forward. While some advocate for dialogue and incremental change, others believe that direct action and public protest are necessary to bring about meaningful reform.
